The Trello Board Meta scoring rubric has moved ahead of src/hiring.njk. The board's own 🌐 PUBLIC CAREER SOURCES card names this page as the source of truth for role shape, location, compensation, employment, culture, values, first-contact context, and interview format, but the page no longer carries everything the rubric scores.

One item is an outright contradiction, the rest are gaps.

Contradiction

  • Structurally office-free companies. The rubric scores "no offices anywhere" at the category maximum, explicitly stronger than a hybrid role with a real Bay Area office. The hard gate is narrower than the page implies: it fires only when a company has offices and none are in the Bay Area. The page's "No Bay Area office is a hard stop" tells all-remote companies at the top of the preference ladder not to write.

Gaps to close

  • Sourcing: name the company, and direct founder or hiring-manager contact beats agency-mediated outreach.
  • Company stage and stability is scored, and small companies with credible traction are not penalized.
  • Developer-tooling companies where DevEx is the product sold to customers score in the top role-shape band.
  • Culture and operating fit outweighs compensation, title, and stack.
  • Representation and inclusion is its own criterion, including commitment rollbacks as a negative.
  • Technical environment matters less than the problem, and the resume is the only source for claimed background.
  • Hard-no verticals and an explicit values veto are flat gates, not soft drags.
  • Ownership: early-company breadth ranks above a first-platform-hire charter at an established company.
  • Staff is not automatically better than Senior.
  • Agent-first work includes agentic coding tools and platforms where agents are first-class users.
  • Bounded delivery includes modernization, platform control planes, and agentic operations.

Deliberately not published

Recruiter cadence and expiry timers stay internal board machinery. The FTE-client-services versus independent-contracting distinction stays a live-conversation topic. Hard-no verticals are named as a category without listing them.

Companion board change

The location rule also needs an offshore-only-offices band added to rubric category 1, since a US-remote company whose only office is overseas carries no return-to-office risk for a Bay Area engineer. That edit lands on Trello, not here.
