What was asked

Despite the title, the concrete ask is a clothing set rather than a vehicle. Theo's proposal:

  • A leaded belt that counters natural flotation, so diving works like flying without holding ctrl.
  • A head piece that reduces calorie loss while swimming.
  • A feet piece that increases swim speed, the underwater equivalent of running shoes.

Theo has used a mod that remapped vanilla clothes to these effects and found it worked but looked bad. The open question was how hard it is to duplicate and remap existing clothes, or author new ones.

The feasibility disagreement, which is the useful part

Theo relayed an assessment from an external mod author:

Yes, I'm talking about vehicles. Because to make a vehicle fly or go underwater, you have to modify the client-side scripts associated with them, and that isn't possible with mods. As for the bonuses, yes, that's likely doable. Changing the appearance of outfits is very complicated as things stand; that's why there aren't any clothing mods. But technically, it should be possible.

Kai pushed back on the premise rather than the conclusion:

I suspect the "that isn't possible with mods" statement isn't accounting for the fact that I have dev tier access + already have made a boat

Her caveat on that existing work: "vehicle mods are fragile and I haven't rebuilt the code in 2 majors."

So the stat bonuses are agreed to be feasible, the visual reskin is agreed to be the hard part, and the vehicle claim is contested.

Adjacent asks raised in the same thread

  • Underwater building QOL, including a Minecraft-style sponge that drains a sealed underwater room. Theo flagged this as purely QOL.
  • A harpoon or speargun using arrows, so hunters can work underwater.
  • Fish trap balance. Kai: "People are too spoiled by the fish trap I fear." Theo noted traps do not catch everything, and sharks still require a pole.

None of those were split into their own threads. Split them out if any get picked up.

Sequencing

Blocked behind airships by Kai's own ordering: #22
