Closes #962.

Restores README.md to the curated pre-burndown front-door shape from before 006ac009b1454d6d257ddc4d4d4ddf12e58ab7ac, while preserving current ward doctor and compatibility-matrix references and retargeting old links to the current collapsed docs tree.

Validation:

  • pre-commit run --all-files
