Restore README.md to the curated front-door version from before 006ac009b1454d6d257ddc4d4d4ddf12e58ab7ac, while preserving the later factual additions for ward doctor and the compatibility provider matrix.

This backs out the accidental README sweep from the mass documentation burndown without reverting unrelated docs changes.
