Recovered branch. It was local-only on Kai's workstation and never pushed, so this work existed in exactly one place.

Surfaced by a fleet branch sweep, not by fresh authoring. Nothing here has been rebased, squashed, or edited - the branch is pushed exactly as it sat on disk.

The purpose is already discharged. This branch references #816, which is closed, and the aos-precommit release train split it carries is live on main. It also conflicts across 21 files after three weeks.

If the pinned Git LFS install is still missing from the dev-base image, re-cut it from current main as a fresh one-line change rather than reviving this branch.

Branch left in place, so this is reopenable.
