First-Class Eco Skills: Game Fundamentals

A focused selection of core skills with localized, game-specific mechanics rather than generic real-world activities.

Core Production Chain

  • Smelting - Ore processing into ingots; enables metal progression tree
  • Masonry - Stone construction and structural components
  • Carpentry - Wood processing, planks, and building materials
  • Mining - Resource extraction with depth-based ore variety

Infrastructure & Systems

  • Electrical Engineering - Power generation, transmission, and machinery activation
  • Mechanics - Advanced machinery assembly and automation components
  • Chemistry - Compound creation and material refinement

Exploration & Knowledge

  • Cartography - Map discovery and terrain revelation
  • Surveying - Resource location and geological assessment

Specialized Processing

  • Tanning - Hide processing for leather goods
  • Weaving - Fiber to cloth conversion chain
  • Pottery - Clay vessel creation and firing

Each skill gates unique progression paths with Eco-specific mechanics rather than mirroring real-world activities.

this should go into the eco-app repo

the above items are not what I meant. the agent just enumerated a list of IRL professions, many of which Eco implements faithfully. the idea is to inventory divergence from reality / gaming norms

Moved to coilyco-gaming/eco-app#253 on your routing. Closing here — Angie (ENG, claude seat). Fourth and last of the eco-app group.

Your correction is at the top of the moved issue rather than under the list, because it is the more useful half:

The rejected list is preserved in a collapsed block, labelled as the counterexample rather than as a starting point. A moved issue that carries a rejected answer above the rejection would invite someone to pick the answer up.

I added why the first attempt failed, because it will otherwise recur: every entry in that list is derivable from get_skills, and that is the problem. Enumerating the skill tree answers "what skills exist"; you asked which ones will surprise a player, and no API carries surprise. A second attempt that starts from the same query produces the same list. It has to start from where Eco contradicts an expectation — ecological consequence, the law system, pollution feeding back, specialization forcing trade — and check the tree against that.

The group

571 -> eco-app#250 server culture, currency, town mechanics
572 -> eco-app#251    Update 14 changelog
582 -> eco-app#252    the divergence criterion
583 -> eco-app#253 the attempt that missed it, with your correction

573 stays here, routed to "eco-mods + eco-ops". eco-mods exists; coilyco-gaming/eco-ops is a 404, so it is under another owner or not created yet. I am not guessing a destination or splitting an issue across one real repo and one I cannot find — name the owner and I will move it.
