Routing note // The three discord meta threads in that forum have no home in the eco repos. Kai routed them here on 2026-08-20 as the Discord community agent harness.

What was asked

Have a bot greet new arrivals in #public-arrivals and prompt them to introduce themselves.

The thread body is //, so the title is the whole suggestion.

Status

Not blocked on capability. Kai in-thread:

These exist, just haven't set it up yet

So this is configuration and copy rather than new development.

Why it is worth doing

Newcomer retention comes up repeatedly across the forum as an unsolved problem. Theo, in the star-gain thread: late joiners get discouraged because everyone else is doing everything better and cheaper, and "Imagine if newcomers could be competitive. Maybe they'd stick around." An intro prompt is the cheapest available intervention on the same problem, since it converts a silent join into a first interaction.

What to decide

  1. Which bot. Echo, Deep, or an off-the-shelf greeter.
  2. Whether the prompt is a static message or an agent turn that responds to what the person actually says. The second is the more interesting option given what this repo already does, and the more likely to annoy people if it misfires.
  3. What the prompt asks for. An unstructured "say hi" produces less than a couple of specific questions.
  4. Rate and repeat behavior, so a member who ignores it is not pestered.

Elizabeth's reply in-thread was a joke GIF, so treat the tone bar as real: a greeter that reads as spam is worse than none.
